Panascal

See its Characteristics

In the mouth the rich, delicious fruitiness of this wine combines with grainy, beautifully integrated tannins to produce an unbridled eruption of texture and flavor.

Similarly to the Fonseca Vintage Ports and the Guimaraens Vintage Ports, blended from the wines of its three estates, the company also offers rich, velvety Single Quinta Vintage Ports produced entirely from the produce of Quinta do Panascal.

These are the pure expression of the estate's terroir. Like the Guimaraens Vintage Ports, these are made in years that produce smoother, more accessible wines that do not need to be stored for a long time before being enjoyed.

Situated on the steep right bank of the river Távora, Quinta do Panascal is one of the most renowned vineyards in the Douro region. In the words of a saying, "From Roncão and Panascal come the best wines of Portugal".

Since its acquisition by the company in 1978, the property has undergone a major investment aimed not only at renovating the vineyard, but also to ensure that the property produces excellent wines, which today form the backbone of the Fonseca Vintage Port blend.

The wines from Quinta do Panascal are rich, with a voluptuous fruitiness, density in the mouth and a velvety texture.

  • Fonseca Porto 16ºC - 18 ºC

The Port continues to improve for decades after bottling. The bottle should be kept lain down in a cool place, ideally at a temperature below 16ºC.

Should be decanted before being served. Stand the bottle upright a few hours before decanting to allow the sediment to fall to the bottom of the bottle. Pour the wine in a slow, steady stream into a decanter, ensuring that only the clear wine is poured, leaving the sediment behind.

Tasting Notes

Opaque purple color with narrow violet rim. The nose begins with an unbridled wave of concentrated, dense cassis and black cherry combined with a sumptuous confection of molasses and dark chocolate.

As it develops, damson plum notes emerge from the seemingly impenetrable layer of dark red fruits followed by intoxicating herbal aromas and exotic notes of black pepper and sandalwood.

In the mouth the rich, delicious fruitiness of this wine combines with grainy, beautifully integrated tannins to produce an unbridled eruption of texture and flavor. The opulent black fruit flavors are seemingly endless and are lifted by a spicy freshness on the finish.

Notes on Viticultural Year

The winter preceding the 2005 harvest was extremely cold and dry, leaving water reserves severely reduced, after an equally dry and warm 2004.

Due to the cold weather and the lack of water, the growing season started later than usual. The entire growing season was marked by lower vigor and smaller berry size, in all varieties.

From May 16 until September 6 there was almost no rain. However, despite the extreme heat and drought-like conditions, the ripening process continued normally, although at a slower pace than normal. Fortunately, the dry summer conditions were mitigated by the steady rains that fell between September 6 and September 9, giving the vines much needed relief, allowing them to complete the ripening process and obtain a perfectly ripe and balanced harvest.

Pairing Suggestions

Walnuts are an excellent accompaniment to Vintage Port, as are various cheeses such as Stilton and Dorset Blue Vinny. So too are dried fruits such as apricots or figs. Alternatively, simply savour the unadulterated taste in a good glass with good company.
