The vineyards and the Douro

The two properties in the Pinhão valley - Quinta do Cruzeiro and Quinta de Santo António - have been supplying Fonseca for over a hundred years.

Quinta do Panascal in the Távora river valley has a more recent association with Fonseca, but its wines perfectly complement the wines produced by the other two quintas in the Pinhão valley. It is also at Panascal that an exceptional Single Quinta Vintage Port is produced made exclusively from grapes grown on the property.

The unique terroir of each estate contributes to the distinctive character of the Fonseca Vintage Port blend. For example, Cruzeiro provides the dense core of black fruits and tannins. This core is wrapped in the rich, juicy flavors and velvety texture of the wines from Panascal and overlaid by the intoxicating exotic aromas from Santo Antonio. The fusion of the wines from these three different quintas explains the multi-layered, multi-dimensional quality of Fonseca Vintage Port wines and their ability to continue to release waves of complex, opulent aroma over decades of bottle aging.

Fonseca properties have also been the target of pioneering developments in organic and sustainable viticulture in the Douro region. Quinta do Panascal was one of the first properties in the region to obtain organic certification for its vineyard areas. The quinta de Santo António has been fully converted to the award-winning sustainable viticulture model developed by the company's viticulture team and is certified for organic grape and olive oil production.
